DIY Recipes: Deodorant

One of the first products many people like to replace when deciding to live a more pure, health conscious lifestyle is deodorant. Applied daily to sensitive areas of the body, what’s in your deodorant quickly makes its way into your body. Go the easy route and purchase one of the amazing options we already offer or use the recipe below to create your own natural alternative and remove toxic chemicals from your daily routine.

Do-it-yourself natural deodorant, arrowroot powder with PURELY essential oils

Making your own deodorant is actually very easy. With just three ingredients that you likely have around the house you can create a base mixture to customize with your favorite essential oils. Keep in mind, this formula is not an antiperspirant. You will still sweat which is okay; that’s part of the body’s natural mechanisms for cooling and releasing toxins. Sweat is great, stinky doesn’t have to tag along!

Also note, in switching from a “traditional” chemical deodorant to a natural one, you may find that you’ll go through a detox period. This could mean more sweat or more odor for a short time while your body readjusts back to its natural state. Your body is releasing the chemicals it was storing and this is a normal part of the process.

Natural Deodorant BASE

All of the recipes on today’s post start with the same base. We’re making a sizable batch that should last at least a month so make sure you store the final product in an airtight container so that moisture and evaporation don’t ruin it. You might also need to store this formula of deodorant in the refrigerator depending on how warm your climate is. The base that we are going to add essential oils to is three parts.

  • 4 tablespoons arrowroot powder (or corn starch)
  • 4 tablespoons baking soda
  • 5 tablespoons coconut oil

We’re going to aim for a 1% saturation of essential oils, so that means 39 total drops of EO according to our dilution chart. Since sensitive areas of the body are going to be exposed to essential oils, it’s important to start low and test for sensitivity before increasing saturation. Adjust down by half – to 19 drops of EO – if this deodorant will be used by children over the age of six, elderly adults, or people with sensitive skin.

  1. Mix dry ingredients together.
  2. Mix coconut oil and essential oils together.
  3. Mix wet and dry ingredients together.
  4. Store in proper container.
  5. Place in refrigerator to set.
