Salt Dough Ornaments

  • 1 cup flour (do not use self-rising flour)
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Your Favorite PURELY™ Essential Oils
  • Cookie cutters
  • Drinking straw
  • Decorations (Paint, ink, stamps, glitter, ribbon, etc.)
  • Non-toxic acrylic sealer

Yields: About 12 four-inch ornaments

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Combine flour, salt, and water in a medium mixing bowl and stir together.
  3. Prepare a flat work surface with flour and knead dough until it’s soft and pliable.
  4. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  5. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.
  6. Leave shapes in place and remove excess dough first. Save to re-roll later.
  7. Continually add flour to surfaces, rolling pin, and cookie cutters as needed to keep from sticking.
  8. Using your straw, create a hole for the ribbon that will hang the ornament.
  9. Use a flat spatula to transfer shapes onto prepared baking sheets.
  10. Place ornaments in the oven and bake until completely dry and hard, about two to three hours.
  11. Flip once while baking, then remove and allow to cool completely.
  12. Add 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil to the ornaments.
  13. Decorate as desired and then seal ornaments with two to three thin coats of acrylic varnish.
  14. Tie with a ribbon and ta-da!
