Six Steps to Survive Holiday Stress

Extra long to-do lists. Multiple calendars and commitments. So. Many. People. To. Consider. The holidays can be hectic, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. Use the six tips below to avoid some common pitfalls and lower the bar from stressful to manageable this season.

  1. Identify sources and triggers.

Step one for surviving the holidays is information gathering. Evaluate what has caused you problems in the past so that you can better prepare for it now and in the future. Are you a planner and hate when schedules get changed? Way to go on your committed personality! Would you rather be cooking than socializing (or vice versa?) Great! Recognize your strengths and weaknesses and then use them to your advantage when making plans and navigating commitments.

  2. Focus on an attitude of gratitude.

Remember the reason for the season and resist getting swept up by “the expectations” of others. Do what feels right to you and have the confidence to stand by those choices regardless of what others think. Having trouble keeping this focus or need a confidence boost? Write down five things you are grateful for and that little list can quickly shift you out of a bad mood or stressful feelings.

  3. Budget for everything.

Money. Food. Your time. Over-extending is often at the root of many holiday stressors. Know your limits and write them down. You don’t have to accept every invitation that comes your way. The kids don’t need ten different stuffed animals or the latest tech gadget to make this “the best Christmas ever.” You know your situation and calendar better than anyone else; someone demanding more is thinking more about themselves than you.

  4. Carve out time for yourself.

As a follow up to number three, make sure to budget time for breaks. It’s your holiday too and you deserve downtime to decompress and enjoy the moments. When planning your holiday schedule, leave some personal time for taking a walk, quiet meditation, or whatever relaxing activity helps calm you down. Taking care of your own needs will help rejuvenate and make you more productive for handling any holiday situations that arise.

  5. Put Healthy in, Get healthy out.

The holidays are full of big dinners, delicious desserts, and tons of snacks. Enjoy your favorites but don’t let overeating derail your healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a good balance of sugar and hydration can help keep your mood and energy positive. Again, budget your meals and don’t be afraid to bring healthy alternatives to the table. (P.S. Drink plenty of water!)

  6. Set The right atmosphere.

Clear the air of stress and tension, literally! By diffusing essential oils with an ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser you can set the mood and help put everyone in the holiday spirit. By dispersing these powerful, natural chemical compounds throughout the air you will create a warm, inviting environment for everyone to enjoy. Popular seasonal scents include Balsam Fir, Cinnamon Bark, Peppermint, or the PURELY™-exclusive Jovial™ blend. A diffuser is also great when it’s time for those relaxing breaks; the fresh scent of Lavender or Roman Chamomile wafting through the air can help gently calm the mind and aid in relaxation.
