Summer Grilling with Essential Oils

Outdoor cooking is a staple of summertime fun. So fire up the grill and enjoy a tasty meal made with the healthy addition of essential oils. Here are a few recipes to make your next cookout extraordinary – including a fun summer drink to enjoy while out in the sun.

Honey Lime Chicken Wings

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 3 drops PURELY™ Walk the Lime™ Essential Oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, skins removed and smashed
  • 3 limes, juiced and zested
  • 4 lbs of chicken wings, washed and patted dry
  • Coarse salt

Yields: About 24 chicken wings

Directions:

  1. Combine honey, soy sauce, hot sauce, essential oil, garlic, lime juice, and lime zest in a large bowl.
  2. Pour 1/4 of this mixture into another container to reserve for later.
  3. Add chicken wings to large bowl of marinade and toss to coat.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 and up to 8 hours. Stir once or twice depending on time sitting.
  5. Prepare grill and lightly coat grill rack with cooking oil or spray to prevent sticking.
  6. Cook until the thickest wing reads 165 degrees Fahrenheit on a meat thermometer. (Appx. 20 minutes.) Turn wings as needed to prevent over-charring and move smaller wings to a cooler section of the grill when finished.
  7. Remove wings from grill and place on serving tray.
  8. Pour reserved marinade over cooked wings and sprinkle with salt. Enjoy!

 

Italian Steak Marinade

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried red chili pepper flakes
  • 4 drops PURELY™ Basil Essential Oil
  • 4 drops PURELY™ Oregano Essential Oil
  • 4 drops PURELY™ Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 2 drops PURELY™ Thyme Essential Oil

Yields: Enough marinade for a one to two pound steak

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together and pour over steak in a shallow glass bowl or baking pan.
  2. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before grilling.
  3. Discard marinade after use.

Shrimp and vegetable kebabs, Lemon and Coriander marinade, cooking with essential oils

 

Shrimp and Veggie Kebab

Ingredients:

  • 4 wooden skewers
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon fresh chopped parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 drops PURELY™ Lemon Essential Oil
  • 2 drops PURELY™ Coriander Essential Oil
  • 10 medium shrimp
  • 1 medium green pepper
  • 1 medium white onion
  • 10 cherry tomatoes
  • 10 white button mushrooms

Yields: Four kebabs

Directions:

  1. Soak wooden skewers in water for one hour before prep to prevent burning on the grill.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, Dijon mustard, parsley, garlic and essential oils.
  3. Add shrimp to mixture and let sit while you prepare vegetables.
  4. Chop green pepper and white onion into kebab-size chunks.
  5. On wooden skewers, alternate shrimp with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, green pepper, and onion pieces.
  6. Brush kebabs with any leftover marinade.
  7. Grill until shrimp turn pink on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes for each side.

 

Grilled Pineapple

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons dark honey
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 drops PURELY™ Walk the Lime™ Essential Oil
  • 2 drops PURELY™ Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
  • 1 ripe pineapple, cut into half-inch rings

Yields: About six to eight servings

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the honey, olive oil, and essential oils. Whisk to blend, then set aside.
  2. Prepare grill and lightly coat grill rack with cooking oil or spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Lightly brush pineapple rings with the marinade.
  4. Grill until tender and golden, about 3-5 minutes on each side. Baste during cooking once or twice more with the remaining marinade.
  5. Serve warm.

Lavender Lemonade

Ingredients:

Yields: One gallon

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a gallon container.
  2. Stir until sugar is completely dissolved.
  3. Chill and serve over ice.
